7 Common Mistakes When Winterizing Your RoboUP Robot Mower

Vane M. - 2024/12/08

With the 2024 mowing season behind us and winter approaching, it's time to winterize your robot lawn mowers for storage until the next spring mowing season.

While many people plan to maintain their robot lawn mowers, some common errors can occur during the process. Here, we highlight typical maintenance mistakes to help you avoid them and keep your robot mower in top condition.

Take a look at RoboUP's Winter Maintenance Tutorial Video to see how to keep your mower in top shape during the off-season.

1. Storing the Robot Mower with a Fully Drained Battery

Before storage, charge the battery to at least 50% to help conserve energy and prolong the mower's battery. Avoid leaving it completely drained until next mowing season.

2. Storing the Robot Mower without Cleaning

Before storing for the winter, clean the mower thoroughly. Remove grass clippings and debris from the blades and cutting discs. After powering off, you can rinse off the remaining grass with a hose and use putty knife or a screwdriver to clear away any clumps blocking blade movement. Rinse the underside to prevent corrosion, then dry the robot mower to prevent rust.

3. Forgetting to Maintain the Charging Base Station and RTK Reference Station

Detach and clean the Charging Base Station and the RTK Reference Station. Remember to clean the bottom of the Charging Station before storage. Reassemble these accessories again when the next mowing season begins.

4. Ignoring Blade Maintenance

Sharpening the lawn mower blade will ensure that the robot mower works efficiently for next spring. Clean them and apply a light layer of protective oil to prevent rust over the winter.

If the blades are heavily worn, replace them immediately to avoid issues later. You can purchase another lawn mower blade, to have it on hand in case you need it. Using dull blades can harm your lawn, making it look worse and more susceptible to disease.

5. Over-Disassembling the Robot Mower

Some might mistakenly believe that cleaning a robot mower thoroughly involves disassembling it right away. However, our robot mower is sealed to keep out dirt, so disassembly isn’t necessary and can actually cause issues. This applies not only to the robot mower's body but also to the cutting disc. Forcing it off can damage screws, making proper reassembly difficult and potentially affecting the mower's performance.

6. Choosing a Poor Storage Location for Winterization

Cover your robot mower with the package box or a waterproof tarp to keep out dust. The storage location should be a flat, stable surface in a cool, dry area to protect your robot mower from moisture damage and ensure optimal preservation.

7. Using a High-Pressure Water Jet to Clean

While our robot mowers are IPX6 waterproof and can be rinsed with a garden hose, avoid flipping them upside down or using high-pressure jets, which can cause damage. After washing, allowing it to dry out upright before storing.

Here's a tip: Placing mothballs near your robot mower during the winter can deter mice and other small pests from nesting inside as they may cause damage by chewing on wires of Charging Station & RTK Reference Station.

Leaving a robot lawn mower outside in the winter can shorten its lifespan and lead to costly repairs or replacements. Robot mowers are not cheap, to make your cost worthy, a proper winterization is necessary. Avoiding these common winter maintenance mistakes above will prepare your robot lawn mower for the upcoming mowing season.
